Flow

Four phases. Always the same.

01

Resistance

First your mind pushes back. That's not a bug. That's the cover charge.

02

Letting go

At some point, fighting stops working. Then it goes quiet.

03

Flow

Clarity, focus, no sense of time. And none of it comes on command.

04

Renewal

No recovery, no next flow. The phase almost everyone skips.

The cycle goes back to the research around Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, extended by more recent neuroscience. It is the backbone of my book Die Flow-Formel and the reason I stopped believing in motivational talks.

Self-experiment

Phase four begins with the out-breath.

Six breaths, one minute. Four seconds in, six seconds out. The longer exhale slows your pulse. That's the whole trick. Nothing measured, nothing stored.

Resistance is the cover charge you pay to get into the flow club at all. And there's no back door.
